Our Story
The Freedom Clasp was born from a simple idea: everyone should be able to enjoy wearing their jewelry without frustration, struggle, or dependence on others.
The Freedom Clasp is the collaborative effort of Master Jeweler Sonny Burgoon and Inventor William Duncan, Esq., along with his wife, Sherri R. Duncan, DVM.
As a 30-year veteran of the jewelry industry and owner of The Diamond Collection in Georgetown, South Carolina, Sonny witnessed a common challenge among his customers. Many loved their jewelry but struggled daily with traditional clasps. Arthritis, limited dexterity, long nails, and aging hands often made putting on or removing jewelry a frustrating experience.
Determined to find a solution, Sonny shared his idea with Bill Duncan. Bill immediately understood the problem.
"My wife struggles with that every day!" he said.
Bill's wife, Sherri, is an avid collector of vintage costume jewelry and wears it daily. Like countless jewelry lovers, she had grown tired of wrestling with traditional clasps and relying on others for assistance.

The inspiration behind the Freedom Clasp became even more personal when Sonny was helping an elderly customer suffering from arthritis. After trying numerous traditional clasp options without success, the customer looked at him emotionally and said:
"You may as well just sell my jewelry for me, because I can't wear it anymore."
Those words hit hard. No one should have to give up wearing cherished jewelry because a clasp is too difficult to operate.
Determined to help, Sonny offered the customer an early prototype of what would eventually become the Freedom Clasp.
"Let me know if this helps you or not," he said.
The next morning, Sonny arrived at his store to find the customer waiting outside before opening.
With tears in her eyes, she exclaimed:
"Because of you, I now have the freedom to wear my jewelry again."
At that moment, Sonny, Bill, and Sherri knew they were onto something truly meaningful.
Together, they set out to create a completely new type of jewelry clasp that would accomplish three important goals:
Easy to Use
Unlike traditional jewelry clasps, the Freedom Clasp is designed to be simple to put on and remove.
Secure for Everyday Wear
Unlike ordinary magnetic clasps that can separate unexpectedly, the Freedom Clasp incorporates an innovative interlocking design that provides strength and security throughout the day.
Independence
Most importantly, the Freedom Clasp allows people to wear and remove their jewelry themselves—without needing assistance from a spouse, friend, or caregiver.

Today, Freedom Clasp helps jewelry lovers across the country regain the confidence, independence, and joy that comes from wearing the pieces they love.
Because jewelry should be worn and enjoyed—not left sitting in a jewelry box.
